bear my soul to hell

Well, come again to-morrow: fare thee well:
A fiend like thee might bear my soul to hell.

word of the day!

anathema : (n) something or someone that one vehemently dislikes

  • (n) a formal curse by a pope or a council of the Church, excommunicating a person or denouncing a doctrine
  • (n) (poetic/literary) a strong curse

His lifestyle of thoughtless hedonism was anathema to me.

That’s right. Anathema is so awesome, I can’t pick just one definition to give. Though, if I’m being honest, I really only use the first. But then, everybody only uses the first. When’s the last time you heard anybody talking about that anathema the pope issued? Or saying something like “damn, I need to lay off the anathemas. My girlfriend hates when I swear”?

Yeah, that’s what I thought.

Fucking Apollo, man. No means no! It doesn’t mean chase the chick until she turns into a wood nymph out of desperation!

word of the day!

irascible : (adj) (of a person) easily made angry

Her irascibility made her difficult to be around: say the wrong thing, and your life expectancy decreased significantly.

You know who’s irascible? Pallas cats. See also: exhibits A, B, and C.

(All pictures shamelessly appropriated from cleolinda and her Pallas Cat Day.)

word of the day!

magnanimous : very generous or forgiving, especially towards a rival or someone less powerful than oneself

How magnanimous of you, to grant me a reprieve after beating me five times in a row.

I’ve seen it so often used in a sarcastic context that I think of it as having a connotation of condescension. But I can’t be sure if that’s a legitimate interpretation of the word, or if I’m unfairly limiting its use.

Fuck it, if it’s coming from a position of power, it’s most likely condescending. Apologies to any sincerely magnanimous people out there, but you’re in the minority.

word of the day!

gravitas : (n) dignity, seriousness, or solemnity of manner

I was impressed by his gravitas until I listened to what he was actually saying.

You could try to slip this word into conversation, too, but I’m pretty sure it’d only make you look pretentious. Which is not to say it’s not an awesome word. Because it is. But it is an awesome word best saved for discussing public figures, like the president. Not for that one dude who always seems so serious.

word of the day!

obfuscate : (v) render obscure, unclear, or unintelligible

The thick coating of dust obfuscated the detailed engraving, leaving only the impression of a silhouette recognizable.

Now here’s a word you can slip into conversation and come out the better for. Granted, you might not often get the opportunity to, but when it comes up—BAM. Whip it out and impress all your friends!

…Or make them stare at you blankly, whatever.

word of the day!

pique : (v) stimulate (interest or curiosity)

Her vague answers piqued my interest—I loved a mystery.

Okay, people, I know it sounds like “peaked” ( (v) reach a highest point, either of a specified value or at a specified time) but I promise you IT IS NOT. THEY ARE IN NO WAY RELATED OR AT ALL SIMILAR IN MEANING. PLEASE STOP USING PEAKED WHEN YOU MEAN PIQUED.

/yet another less-than-common language peeve that nevertheless raises my blood pressure something fierce

word of the day!

malaise : (n) a general feeling of discomfort, illness, or uneasiness, whose exact cause is difficult to determine

Malaise struck him in August and refused to lift until November; he got nothing done and drove his friends to distraction.

Right now I associate it with the song “Two Weeks” by Grizzly Bear. See the following audio post for more information!

(But seriously, I love this word. Not the concept it expresses—at least, not as it relates to my life—but the word itself. Which doesn’t make any sense, but there you go.)
