bear my soul to hell

Well, come again to-morrow: fare thee well:
A fiend like thee might bear my soul to hell.

atonement : (n) reparation for a wrong or injury

To have his liver torn out and devoured day after day; this was Prometheus’ god-imposed atonement for daring to give fire to humans.

Incidentally, Atonement is also a novel by Ian McEwan, though it’s probably better known as the 2007 movie with Keira Knightley and James McAvoy. Which isn’t so bad: the movie was actually a very faithful adaptation. And it had a kickass score.

Still. Y’all should read the novel. It’s an interesting study in perspectives and the consequences of misunderstanding. And despite the outline of the plot, it refrains from offering easy solutions, either by placing blame or bestowing happy endings. A lot of its elements are fantastical, or at least improbable, but its characters are always real, human, and flawed.

So yeah. It’s a good book.
